Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a plasticizer added to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to make the normally rigid plastic more flexible.
Many companies, especially those in the medical device industry, are requiring suppliers to inform them of DEHP or other phthalate use. The FDA issued a health warning advising the public that DEHP could leech out of PVC and pose a health risk in certain high-risk groups. Specifically, there are concerns pertaining to the effects on the development of the male reproductive system.
